Hozho: Balance and Harmony in the Dine World
The structural function is related to the origin of social structures and the overall functions that Hozho performed. Hozho essentially showed the entirety of the Navajo belief in one package as he showed structural function of social solidarity of holding the Navajo society together by Durkheim and by functioning as an authority figure bestowing repressive laws and regulations for any violations of what was seen as common morality that bound society together to be punished. The Navajo norms were based on the way Hozho expressed the nature of sacred thing such as their land, plants, family, animals, and clan responsibilities. The physical symbols and such were used as an indication to new developed social relations. This is essentially the reason that the world has changed so quickly in the cultural scheme of things. Structural function theory is expressed in the norms and symbols throughout the entire Navajo culture. Hozho is still the main reason behind the essence of the Navajo social life by providing it with cultural unity and structure. Being accepted isn’t about defeat, its about looking at the bigger picture and making sure your work of preparing is combined with passion and interest in the world as it is and is not wasted on trying to chase pieces of an already vanished past. Acceptance is essentially the key to successful practice or gratitude as this is the main idea of Hozho. Everyone sees riches in a balanced life that isn’t vulnerable to collapsing, there’s more to life and that is the real freedom and wealth in allowing yourself to let of the trappings of anti-Hozho which is nothing more than an illusion to being with.
