30 For 30 Paper: Broke
In this documentary it really focuses on and breaks down how and why many athletes in todays world end up broke after a few years out of the league. In this film it is broken up into many different segments explaining the different ways athletes can fall into these money problems. Starting out one of the main problems discussed is how most athletes go straight from college right on to the big stage, earning a lot of money all at once and not really knowing what to do with it, how to manage it or how to spend it. Another problem is in the culture of sports, all the players want to look good and have all these expensive things and go to all the clubs and throw down a lot of money. However, in doing this, everyone wants to be the top dog and show how much money they have but in reality, not every player is earning the big paycheck like everyone things, so not every player can really afford to live that glamorous lifestyle. Later, the film touches on how since many players are so successful in sports, they want to continue that in their lives and carry that over in other investments, which typically fall through causing them to lose a lot of money. Another major issue for many athletes is figuring out whom they can trust with their money. There have been many cases of athletes’ agents taking advantage of them and stealing money in different ways, because these athletes are not educated on how to handle their finances. This can also tie in with women, because there are those women out there who are just in it for the money and will act like they love you but then take you for everything you have. An finally there was a big emphasis on being able to just say no with people, because you cant just keep giving to everyone for the money you worked hard for, because everything adds up and one day it will come back to bite you.
