Anti-refugee and Pro-refugee sentiments
- 5 January 2015: 25, 000 Pegida demonstrators in Dresden, Germany
o Across Germany, tens of thousands counter-protestors turned up
o The lights of the iconic Cologne Cathedral went dark in protest against the mounting right-wing protests
- 10 January 2015: 35, 000 demonstrated against Pegida
o Showed support for tolerance and multiculturism
- 12 January 2015: 25, 000 attended Pegida’s demonstration in Germany
o Faced growing opposition by anti-Pregidas
- 12 Sept 2015: 10, 000 in Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia joined protests after their leaders opposed an EU scheme to fix refugee quotas
o Anti-Islamic slogans
o Wants government to hear their voices and abandon plans to welcome anymore Muslim refugees
o Another ~1000 from Poland, ~200 in Czech Republic joined counter-protests in favor of welcoming refugees

- Right wing groups from 14 different countries came together to protest what they call, “Islam conquering Europe.”

o Some blame the Germany government of taking irresponsible risks for allowing the Muslim refugees to flood into Germany

- Since late 2014, anti-refugee sentiments have been on the rise, accompanied with pro-refugee ones. Often, demonstrations by anti-refugees were met with outnumbering pro-refugee turnouts. The momentum of the anti-refugee protests were dying out by the late 2015, but then criminal acts by refugees in Germany on New Years’ eve of 2016 was used as propaganda material to rekindle and perpetuate anti-refugee motivations.
