The author purposely ends the story in an ambiguous manner; however, in the final sentences, he gives hits as to what may have happened. Perhaps, in these hits, the author is suggesting that the baby’s arm has been broken or more disturbing, the baby’s arm was ripped off. By the end of the story, both parents were pulling on the baby; neither wanted to lose the child, and both were determined to do anything to keep the baby. The last sentence, “In this manner, the issue was decided”, seems to support the idea that the baby was hurt in some way.
Although minimalist writing lacks well developed characters, it is unfair to say that this type of writing lacks ideas or is uninteresting. The many gaps and indeterminate present in this type of writing are essential; they help readers to take an active role in the story. By not providing enough description or information, and by providing subtle hints, readers are prompt to create their own ideas to fill the gaps in the story, Instead of reacting to the story.
