I choose to do my research on the urbanization of Sao Paulo, Brazil. In the data that I found in the research said that the population of Sao Paulo had more than doubled and gone from 31,500 to 65,000 between the years of 1872 and 1890. The population had also quadrupled to 240,000 by the year 1900(Henkin,1999).Some believe that this is because it is the regional center for commerence and credit for the expanding coffee business and that is why the population has grown so much, and so fast. Sao Paulo is the world’s second largest city, and the city has gotten its share of problems over the years from the fast growing population. The city is estimated to have a population of 21.4 million residents by the end of the year, by having this large of a population it will cause millions of people to suffer from the slum housing conditions, the population, traffic congestion, and the poor sanitation(Urbanization,2003). There has been a huge growth in business within the city, and it is thought that the development will continue to grow and therefore cause more urbanization in the city and ultimately cause the population to keep growing and cause the problems caused by the population worse. Because of the urbanization and the problems that it is causing the city is trying to come up with some constructive ways to help and control as well as fix the urbanization issues. Some of the stuff that they have done is created more sanitation facilities, electricity, as well as paved roads in the slums of Sao Paulo. They also have a plan for an orbital motorway to try and help and reduce the traffic in the city. By them doing this they have run into a problem, they do not have enough funding. With this issue Brazil is trying to help them and change from being operator to regulator due to the privatization of the country.
