Schlosser V. Spurlock

After reading an excerpt of Fast Food Nation by John Schlosser and watching Super Size Me by Morgan Spurlock, I have come to the conclusion that they have the same purpose and goal. Both Schlosser and Spurlock’s purpose is to showcase the detrimental effects that the nations most prevalent fast food frachise, McDonald’s, can have on a a person’s health through chronic indulgence. They do so in order to warn Americans of the dangerous road they are headed down if they continue the path that they are currently on. However, Spurlock and Schlosser have slightly different methods in doing so. Although they both present diverse amounts of evidence which often times were exactly the same, Spurlock actually documents his 30 day McDonald’s binge experiment which makes it even more real to the viewer. Along the way he shows how his “perfect” health deteriorates. He starts to get headaches, has difficulty breathing, moodswings, chest pains, fatigue, becomes sort of depressed and unhappy until he eats the McDonald’s which he is increasingly craving and lifts his mood. gains 24.5 lbs., his liver becomes fatty, high cholesterol. He named the numerous diseases and health problems that could result from the overeating or chronic eating of fast food. For example, breast cancer, liver failure, obesity, scirrocis, and many more. Spurlock mentions constant facts throughout the film such as, “Everyday 1 in 4 Americans visit a fast food restaurant.” Spurlock shows a series of maps from 1986 onward which showed the increase in obesity over the years in America. Spurlock’s film had a lot of shock value to it and truly displayed the concept of cause and effect. Schlosser and Spurlock show how McDonald’s has saturated every aspect of American live especially in the media. Spurlock says it’s proven that “The most heavily advertised foods are consumed the most.” Therefore, it is no surprise that it is the most consumed fast food. Also, Schlosser brings out that
