School Violence

Violence among young people has increased radically in society. The violent acts being done have occurred not only on the streets but in schools as well. This can include verbal and physical attacks. The violence in our schools has become a big problem in our society. There are several ways we can turn around the attacks. This includes parents, teachers, and other adults helping.

There is so much violence in everyday lives; on TV, in books, in video games. There is no escaping it. It has started to affect student’s daily lives and gotten to the point where some people can't feel safe at school. There are kids dying, whether is suicide or homicide. Mental illness can go hand in hand with both self-harm and harm others. Teenagers struggle with talking to adults about what is going on, even if it is homework, friends, or family. Students aren’t only harming other students; they are also harming teachers.

Many people what to know what causes this violence. They are bullying; verbally, physically, and emotionally. It can come down to something as simple as chance or the harsh effects of bullying and hatred. In the article ‘Multi-tiered System of Support (MTSS) & PBIS’ The author stated that “Based on a problem-solving model, the MTSS approach considers environmental factors as they might apply to an individual student's difficulty” If the environment for students doesn't make them feel safe or welcome many violent happenings can occur (1). The students are damaging property that isn’t there’s and harming and harassing people. A quote from the article, ‘Union: District failed to protect teachers from student violence’ says that “Over the course of three years, employees have reported 71 attacks on 33 of the teachers ranging from pinching to punching and throwing toys to throwing desks.” The article states that teachers have had to start wearing shin guards and chest protectors.”(1) There's no way we will know if all of this will get worse. For some students may be affected by a mental illness causing these violent attacks. Researchers have found a new way to show kids school is not a bad place. “MTSS has emerged as the new way to think about both disability identification and early intervention assistance for the " most vulnerable, academically unresponsive children" in schools and school districts.”(1) If the problems are not receiving the attention and the accommodations needed, violent outbursts may occur. Teachers and parents need to figure out how to prevent these attacks from happening.

Effort from students, teachers, and parents may help prevent these violent attacks. Isolating kids in detention or suspension will not teach them anything, Putting students in detention or suspension won’t help in most cases. It will most likely cause them to stew and act out again.
