It seems that having sex education in school provides enormous benefit to kids and society. Sex education helps kids’ understanding about sexual activity regarding birth control and sexually transmitted diseases. It appeared that teaching children about sex leads to reducing many problems such as the teen pregnancy rate. Therefore, all schools in the U.S. should include sex education in the curriculum for students in grades 1 through 9.
Paul (2007) stated that society had been facing crucial problems about teen sex because most parents in the U.S. deny discussing comprehensive sex topics at home with their children. In fact, they would rather tell their kids to abstain from their sex needs. In other words, they would like their kid to avoid sex practice. This situation leads to kids’ lack of important sex information that causes negative impacts on our society. Due to this problem, comprehensive sex education is necessary in all schools. For example, some researches have indicated that teaching sex education in school reduces the rate of pregnancy in teenagers. In addition, Paul further claimed that 63% of kids are having first sex when they are in high school. This means that they should be educated about safe sex practice since elementary school.
Also, it is likely that having comprehensive sex education in schools encourages conversation between kids and their parents. Subsequently, kids have the opportunity to learn additional information regarding sex from their parents’ point of view. This can help kids understand more about sex.
In addition, Martin (2011) stated that some students in middle schools have oral sex without recognizing that is one kind of sex practices. It seems that without teaching sex education, kids might make mistakes. According to this situation, sex education should not be neglected in school. For instance, how to use a condom is one of the crucial aspects of sex education to prevent teen pregnancy.
Moreover, Harrington (2012) stated that a proper and strong foundation of sexuality education would help kids to be able to wisely manage sexuality in the future. Reports showed that kids who have learnt about comprehensive sex education from elementary school through high school are more understanding of sex than kids who have learnt in high school only. In other words, kids who have understood the basics of sexuality can easily get the advanced topics such as the risks and effectiveness rates of various methods of contraception. As a result, sex education would help students to be able to prevent themselves from getting pregnant and sexually transmitted diseases.
On the other hand, some criticism indicated that having sex education in elementary school is not appropriate because children are not ready to learn about safe sex practice
