Sociology in Action Paper 1
There is something in this world that seems to never go away, you may ask what this is, it is celebrity suicide. Whether it be stress, anxiety, depression, mental break down, there are reasons all over that a celebrity chooses to leave their lives here and move on. Whatever the reason may be, there is a pressure on them that will never leave them, and in the end it falls on the people that do not stand in the limelight.
In our everyday worlds, it seems that there is always a reason for a celebrity to end their life. We may not understand every time why they choose to do this, but in their minds it is the best option. The sad thing is that when we reflect on why they choose this option it mostly has to do with the pressure that our culture puts on celebrities. We put the celebrities of our day on a pedestal that they seem to not come down from. Any wrongdoing a celebrity commits, it is magnified and scrutinized. The media, social media, everything seems to come down on their shoulders and life becomes too big and overwhelming for a human.
Just try to put yourself in this situation; you are someone that is making all this money, you are entertaining the world, one mistake takes all that away. All you hear non-stop is scrutiny and hate. There is no fame that comes from mistakes. Everything is stripped away.
One of the main things that take a toll on celebrities is being so consumed in a role that it makes someone a different person. There is one person that comes to mind with this, Heath Ledger. The role that some have said killed him was the joker in the movie Batman. He was so consumed by the role that he felt like he could never come out of who he tried to be. The joker was who Heath Ledger became, and the joker is who took Heath Ledgers life.
Depression is another toll that celebrities seem to struggle with more often than we want to believe. If you look at the statistics there are so
