Sound and Fury

In the documentary “Sound and Fury”, we are introduced to the deaf culture. We learn of two families that struggle with whether or not to give their children cochlear implants. The film guides us through their lives and we see how their decisions causes much conflict between the families. The hearing culture believes that in order for their children to complete each stage of development, they will need to have the implants; this is where the medial model approach comes into pay. On the other hand, the deaf culture is more concerned with how society with view their decision instead of focusing on what is important for the child.
Heather age six has already adapted to her deaf culture but wants to have the ability to connect with both the hearing and deaf culture. When asked if she could get cochlear Implants her father is against the idea, however her mother is more open to learning about the advantages than her husband. After much research, the family convinces Heather that she is better off without the implants. It is clear that the family feel that if she becomes a part of the hearing world that she with lose her identity with the deaf culture.
I believe that Heather’s parents played a negative role in her psychosocial development. Even though she appears to be developing well in relation to the psychosocial model, I believe that if her parents do not allow her to get the implant they will be hindering her ability to development completely. They are focusing too heavily on what the deaf community will think, without considering the advantages of the procedure. Heather has already adapted to her disability, why not challenge her and allow her to speech to develop as well?
The film also, explores the life Chris and Mari; parents that are a part of the earing culture learn through lack of development that their son is deaf. They immediately look in to getting the child a cochlear implant. The doctor tells them that the earlier the child
