The Influence of Media on Women
As an African American woman I have firsthand experience of how the negative portrayal of black women in the media can directly affect you every day. All you here on the hip-hop radio stations are songs that talk about busting things wide open, about how there girls have girlfriends and the list goes on and on. These songs and videos are only a glimmer of how the media has down played and degraded black women worldwide. I sometimes feel that every race mainly in America have been brainwashed by the media. Over the past few years I have started seeing a small change in media some networks are coming out with some positive roles that depict black women in a positive way. I feel like the effect the media is making is not enough because at the end of the day people are still mainly focused love on the negative and ignore the positive.
Black women have been casted in roles to play as characters in the movies and on television as well you will see them more often being portrayed in unflattering roles. I saw a documentary the other day called Diary of a Mad Black Man and I was y disappointed in the things that these black men had to say about black women. The one thing in the movie that was very disturbing to me is that they say that all black women talk bad about the baby’s daddy’s to their children. All women have been stereotyped in one way or another, but African American Women have been stereotyped by other races as well as our own. In the past few years we have been breaking down barriers showing everyone that black woman are not what you think we are we are so much more than what you see in the media. Even though there are some positive role that are starting to be shown most of what is done cannot be undone because these images have started to become a way of life for a large number of black women today.
