An introduction about the new technical fan, Air Multiplier
Introduction
Nowadays, with the improvement of the technologies of all fields, people’s life quality has been enhanced a lot. One of the most consumption is getting a comfortable room temperature in all four seasons. Currently the most popular choice is the air conditioner. But as we know that it has several disadvantages: it consumes large amount of energy, the volume is big and the price is high. So engineers managed to find out a better machine to achieve the same functions. It is called the Air Multiplier.
This report will give an introduction about the Air Multiplier, starting from the basic concept, to how it works and what improvement it makes. Following by the comparing it with the traditional fan and air conditioner, explain why it is better. At last it will explain about how the machine changes people’s life and what improvement can be still made on it.

What is the Air Multiplier? “An Air Multiplier is a fan without visible blades. It looks like a circular-shaped tube sitting on top of a pedestal [1].” Figure 1 shows it looks totally different from the traditional fan. The traditional fan uses blades rotation to drive the air, so that air will be blown towards human body. But for the air multiplier, there are no blades. So what drives the air?
Working principle
Before going into details, there is a brief introduction about the working method. The air multiplier is consisted with a circular-shaped tube and a pedestal. The tube is called the loop amplifier. It is hollow. On the inside surface there are a series of narrow gap, which is called annular aperture. The air is mainly been processed for four times. First, air is drawn in. Then it is accelerated. After that air is induced. At last it is entrained [3]. Each step will be explained in details according to Figure 2.
The first step is drawing air into the machine. The air will pass through the holes on the pedestal. To achieve this, a brushless motor is used. It is called the mixed flow impeller, which is “a combination of the technologies used in turbochargers and jet engines. It will draw more air into the machine with a lower energy cost [4].” A brushless motor is an improvement of the traditional brush motor. It uses semiconductor switches to control the current flow. “The permanent magnets that would wrap around the armature in a normal motor are instead placed around the motor shaft, and this assembly is called the rotor.
