CHAPTER 1
This chapter gives a brief introduction of the MES system. It contains the company profile, current system and new system. The objective of this chapter is to give a general idea about the system.
1.1 Introduction
This project aims to develop a prototype database system for the Metropolitan Entertainment Services Ltd. Initially the workflow of the current system is studied and then documented using Data Flow Diagram (DFD) and Process Diagram (PD). Then the data requirements of the system is collected and normalized to produce relational tables. The ER diagram of the system is also created which is transformed to Server model database using the Oracle designer. The enhancement to the server model database is done to produce the final database.
1.2 Company Profile
Metropolitan Entertainment Services Ltd (MES) is a medium sized well connected company which specializes in organizing entertainment events, including concerts, film premieres and social events for the entertainment industry in the Greater London area.
1.3 Current System
The current system of Metropolitan Entertainment Services Ltd (MES) is semi automated. The client inquires and bookings are handled partially on a paper based file system and partially on a computer system. Currently a customer first deals with the marketing consultant. The marketing consultant evaluates the customer requirement and then calculates the projected cost of the event. If the client accepts the quotation the event requirement form is forwarded to the office manager. The office manager then allocates the staff and equipments for the event. If the staffs are insufficient he hires contract staff from the company’s list of contract staff. Similarly if equipments are insufficient or special equipment is need he will hire equipment from the company’s authorized suppliers. With the company excelling in terms of growth, the management of the MES has sensed a need to provide quality and efficient services to its clients. MES has contracted Holloway Rise based in Islington North London to develop a fully operational database system.
1.4 New System
A new database system called the MES system will be developed using Oracle 10.2g. This system will maintain staff details, event details, equipments details, suppliers, clients etc. The records are automatically updated from time to time.The new system will increase the efficiency and productivity of the company.
