Abstract - Tonya
This paper explores the technology of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO). A brief description of the technology is explained along with a timeline of how the technology has progressed since its first use along with its current applications today. Political and legal issues are discussed such as regulatory laws within the United States and other countries and current events related to the technology. Economic issues are covered explaining how many multinational corporations and food producers have found the technology profitable. GMO technology has an effect on society and shapes the attitudes of many different cultures around the world, so the sociological and psychological effects are explained. GMO technology is used extensively in the production of agricultural crops. Many environmental issues will be covered such as water and air pollution, soil toxicity, impacts on insects and animals, and impacts on humans. The moral and ethical considerations will also be discussed going over how the technology can possibly be misused for purposes never intended. This paper seeks to determine whether research and testing of genetically modified organisms should be continued due to the public's perceptions and concerns, as well as the unknown or long-term effects of the technology in regards to our health, the environment, and economic industries.
