As a highway engineer at Road Department, Jabatan Kerja Raya Kelantan, your team has been appointed to investigate the following circumstances and prepare a complete technical report to be handed over to the Director of Public Work Department, Malaysia.
- Suggest the cause of this event. State in detail what happen to subgrade, sub-base, base as well as the surface layers that cause the road to fell off.
- Check the strength of the subgrade having CBR of 4% based on AASHTO method to ensure that the newly constructed road can hold the load of high volume traffic (10,000 vehicles/day (bothways) with 25% of the vehicle is a commercial vehicle) for at least 10 years ahead by assuming that the annual growth rate is 5%.
- Design new aggregates mix for surface course to ensure that the specification’s requirement for well-graded aggregate on rolling terrain is met.
- Design the percentage of asphalt that needs to be included in the surface course’s mix having carriageway width of 7.0 m with 2.00m shoulder width according to Asphalt Institute and US Department of Transportation method. Take the BEST percentage of asphalt content. Justify your answer.
- Design the thickness of the sub base, base, wearing and binder course based on given data. Assume the most suitable material to be used as sub base, base, binder course and wearing.
- Based on the calculated results above, suggest your countermeasures to ensure that the same situation will not happen again in future.
