Information Systems Briefing
Purchasing an electronic health record is a major step for any health care organization to make. The implementation of a health record is expensive and time-consuming for any business to take on. An information system is more than just a computer program or software. Information systems are built to meet the given organizations specific needs. It includes a system of individuals, data, and activities that gather, store, and process, and distribute the organizations information (O'Neill, 2011). In the health care industry two main types of information systems are available clinical and administrative (Wagner, Lee & Glaser, 2009). For a health care organization to choose the best system for that specific organization should follow the proper procedure for selecting and acquiring an information system (Wagner, Lee & Glaser, 2009).
Implementation Process
First the system implementation process begins after the organization acquires a system and begins to use the system (Wagner, Lee & Glaser, 2009). This process needs to be considered a priority and has to be supported by the organization and the senior executive team (Wagner, Lee & Glaser, 2009). Many stakeholders are involved in this part of the process. An implementation team handles the planning, coordinating, budgeting, and manages every phase of the system implementation (Wagner, Lee & Glaser, 2009). Next a system champion is the advocate for the system (Wagner, Lee & Glaser, 2009). This individual has to communicate effectively, and act as a leader for the team (Wagner, Lee & Glaser, 2009). The Information Technology (IT) department handles technical support issues (Wagner, Lee & Glaser, 2009).
Implementation Team
First the implementation team will work together to determine the scope and expectations of the project (Wagner, Lee & Glaser, 2009). The implementation team will establish and start the project plan (Wagner, Lee & Glaser, 2009). After the plan has been established, the implementation team will collect feedback from individuals who deal directly with the organization. This feedback with allow the team to know what is needed from the system in terms of performance expectations and requirements (Wagner, Lee & Glaser, 2009). Once the team collects the system requirements this information can then be shared with the vendors and system developers (Wagner, Lee & Glaser, 2009). This is an important phase because the system requirements are laid-out clearly
