Statement of Purpose

Bagher Afshar

I was born in an educated family in which academic education was a deep rooted value. My father is a teacher and he is undoubtedly the first person who taught me the desire for learning.

I discovered the inclination toward physics and mathematics when I entered secondary school and this interest proved decisive in choosing a career as an Engineer. I studied secondary and high school courses in the Iranian Organization for Development of Exceptional Talents (NODET).There I had the opportunity to spend part of my time in the school physics lab. This led me to seek a field with background in physics as my prospective subject. Since the beginning of my secondary school, I worked in school groups to implement simple electronics circuits from reference books on PCB. Making circuits which really work motivated me and I think it was the first factor which opened my eyes to the world of Electronics. At that time although I did not know how those circuits work but I found them quite interesting. During my education in the following years I gradually became familiar with electronics concepts. Its fascinating characteristics, my everlasting desire in electronics and consulting with some of intimate friends who are now educating electronics in PhD degree persuaded me in continuing my education in Electrical Engineering.

In 1999 I succeed to stand at the 10th rank in a nation-wide entrance exam for Universities among more than 300,000 applicants for B.Sc. degree in the country. This exam is the most significant scientific test in Iran, which is held annually. After achieving such an astonishing rank, I entered Sharif University of Technology, the best engineering school in the country and the Middle East. Then I chose electrical engineering as my major in order to pursue my goals.

At the university when I passed electronics (I) and electronics (II) courses with Professor Alavi, my insight to electronics was formed. The way he faced electronics problems, opened new windows in front of my eyes and motivated me to pursue electronics more eagerly than before. In electronics (III) when I was introduced to the book "Design of Analog CMOS Integrated Circuits" written by Prof. Razavi which is a reference book for M.S. course, I found it quite fascinating that it motivates me to read most chapters of the book more than what is required as a B.Sc. course. In this term I enrolled in "Radio Frequency Circuits" course and found it fascinating. Now I am analyzing subjects on integrated circuits and RF circuits and I have gathered some preliminary information. Regarding to these considerations I am going to effectively involve myself in my B.Sc. project.

This summer I collaborated in a research group under supervision of Prof. Bizhan Rashidian in Microtechnology Lab. In that Lab we effectively
