In today's business environment, it is all about technology and the security protecting that company's information. For Riordan Manufacturing, they use technology to better connect with their supplier and consumer by being able to communicate from United States to China. Even when technology creates many opportunities, it also brings the need to increase security in the cyber world. Most companies are now starting to implement positions that are assigned to a certain branch of their information security. This also leads to employee more people and spending more money on security branch of the company.
Riordan Manufacturing will need to increase security because they have recently expanded their factories to Hangzhou, China, meaning there will a higher chance of cyber terrorist or just problems with sending data to the headquarters in San Jose, California. There has also been a wide range of corporations being hacked into including, Sony and Yahoo!. So with all of these events happening, Riordan Manufacturing want to increase their information security by implementing a separation of duties.
Separation of duties is usually used when there are people handling money because for fraud to happen, there must be at least two people involved. The use of separation of duties or SoD, greatly decreases the likelihood of a crime to happen that involves stealing or embezzling the money. Separation of duties is widely used in financial accounting systems and is now starting to be used in the Information Technology industry.
SoD or separation of duties has two primary objectives. First objective is to prevent any conflict of interest, fraud, wrongful acts, errors, and abuse. The second objective is the detection of any security breach, theft of any information, or any circumvention of security controls. Security controls is anything relating to safeguarding the information the company wants to protect. For Riordan Manufacturing, they would use SoD to protect this valuable information while protecting the identity of their consumers and suppliers.
