The need for the book
It is well known that every effect emanate from a particular cause. So the idea for this piece of technical work came as a result of some needs envisaged among chemical engineering undergraduates especially those in the year three, four and five in a foundation course known as chemical engineering process calculations which is a determinant of how well an individual can function as a chemical engineer. Not that there are no textbooks in the course, but the fact is that some of this text are written by professors whose interest may not really be to make the students understand the concept behind the course but rather to express the level of their professionalism in writing hence, the book is written from the students perspective taking into consideration the problems encountered by students in their studies.
Since the writer of this academic material is a student as well, the following needs of students were considered from the student’s perspective.
Insufficient examples in the textbooks
As a student, I have been opportune to hear the students complaining bitterly about insufficient examples in the textbooks which should have facilitated their understanding of the course.
Also, I have seen sections in textbooks after all said and done, you can still come to realize that there is no tangible illustration to aid I better understanding of the discussion in the section and some cases, someone who is not patient can just close the textbook an accept defeat due to this very issue. I say this not because I am putting a solution manual to help my colleagues in better understanding but because I have heard such testimonies from them when they come to me to help them in explaining some doubts which they encountered during their private studies.
In addition to that, examples help in better tackling of the exercises at the end of every textbook in that, someone can always draw some level of understanding from the illustration outlined in the textbook; hence a situation in which you do not see tangible examples in the textbook but you are confronted with gigantic exercises can go a long way to discourage the student rather than encourage the person from making headway in the course study due to lack of understanding.
High level of professionalism in writing textbooks
This was another need that led to the birth of this academic work. As a student, I have come to realize that sometimes you may be faced with some examples in the textbook in which because of the level of the writer in the academic cadre (doctor, professor), the writer may see it unfit to illustrate how on step leads to another during the calculation and for some of our undergraduates this may pose a very serious problem for them because as a student, I have witness some of my colleagues struggling over a very simple thing in the textbooks reason being that due to the height of the writer, he or she has decided to jump or neglect some steps in the illustration. A case study can be drawn from an example having seven steps to the solution, the writer may just decide to ignore about four steps in the examples believing that a normal student should see the jump while in essence this is not so. Sometimes this jump may also be to conserve space during the publishing the book so as to minimize cost but whatever may be the case, these occurrences do not aid the students understanding of the course at all and in some cases it may cause the student to be more confused than ever.
