Ultrasound involves exposing part of the body to high frequency sound waves to produce pictures inside of the body. Ultrasound images are captured real-time. They can show the structure and movement of the body’s internal organs, as well as blood flowing through blood vessels.
Ultrasound is commonly used in medicine today.
• Gynecology- ultrasound is used for measuring the size of the fetus, checking the gender of the baby and monitoring the fetus’ condition.
• Cardiology- it is used to identify abnormal structures or functions of the heart.
• Urology- used to measure blood flow though the kidney.
Ultrasound is used in Industry to analyze the infirmity and purity of liquids and solids. It can also be used for cleaning purposes; subminiature cleaning instruments are used by dentists during routine examination.
It is used in security systems to detect even the slightest movement of a specific area.
According to radiologists, ultrasounds do not have harmful effects on humans. However according to some sites such as www.drbenkim.com, ultrasound waves can produce the following physiological effects:
• Increase in blood flow and temperature in local tissues.
• Production of gas bubbles and mechanical effects like movement on the fluid that surrounds the cell that can put pressure on local tissues.
It is also stated in some researches that ultrasound could actually harm the fetus due to the unnecessary thermal and physical pressure exposed to a growing baby.
