There are many differences the wireless standards. Most of which we see as performance base. The Introduction of the 802.11b standard was the beginning of a new era. It was commonly utilized to create home networks. 802.11b was very limited as well only able to broadcast at a maximum of 11 MBPS. It was the demand for faster internet browsing and wireless resource sharing that prompt the birth of 802.11g. 802.11g contained all of the features of standard B but with more than twice the available speed. 802.11g introduced the speeds of 54 MBPS. The nice thing that has been done with the creation of additional standards are the ability to be backwards compatible. This offered the ability for devices with an 802.11b wireless network card to be able to still communicate with an access point or router capable of “g” speeds. 802.11 A was more of a business standard unlike its predecessors. “A” standard is capable of operating at the max cap of 54 MBPs but with a different level of precision. However, the “a” standard operated on unregulated frequencies of the 2.4 GhZ which allows for that much more interference and less coverage space. 802.11 n, one of the more recent standards able to incorporate and broadcast two frequencies simultaneously, dual band. On the 5 Ghz frequency 802.11 n can support up to 300 MBPS, however the higher the frequency the lower the coverage. 802.11 made vast improvements to the backward compatible standards. The reliability has increased as well as the range.
Standards are meant to instill consistency. I feel that it is necessary to have standards especially in a field where everyone can do their own thing. If there were no standards when it came to Wireless connectivity everyone would have different styles for example imagine if I had Corbin Fi at my house with my own frequencies and equipment and Sally comes by and wants to use my internet. Unless Sally already had a Corbin Fi NIC she wouldn’t be able to connect
