Why was Plantation agriculture wasteful? :
its excessive cultivation of cotton despoiled the good earth.
Where was the "Black Belt"? most of the population describe the southern society: Black belt was lower south because have more slaves. Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana.
Southern society: most of the population- poor whites 80%.
Aristocracy, Code of chivalry= protect anyone inferior. The more the north fight the south the more the south must defend for honor.

Extent of slavery in the south: 1% white families owned 50 or more slaves (plantation owners), 19% owned 50 or less (white yeomen farmers) , 80 % owned no slaves (poor whites, mountain whites)
Describe the attitude towards freed blacks living in the north: discrimination was common .
