The critically acclaimed film Seven, is one of the most distinguished and sadistic thrillers ever produced by Hollywood. Renowned director David Fincher employs numerous cinematic and literary devices to exhibit the urban disparity ascribed to the films milieu and time period. The screenplay, in particular, is written with intriguing, intellectually binding literary devices such as juxtaposition, symbolism, and anthropomorphism, which is supplemented by paradoxical situations such as Buridan’s ass and Morton’s Fork.

Throughout the duration of the film, the lives of William Somerset and Douglas Mills become intertwined during a seven day hunt for a schizophrenic serial killer, whose modus operandi is that of the seven deadly sins. Toward the culmination of the films third act, both of the main characters must make a conflicting choice. This literary device is called Morton’s Fork, in which contradictory arguments lead to the same, unpleasant conclusion By implementing Buridan’s ass, an illustration of philosophy in the conception of free will, characters must strive to achieve their goals, though not make a rational decision in doing so.
