In 1961 the German historian Fritz Fischer published a book called “Germany’s Aims in the first World War.” This book caused a great debate amongst historians and people of Germany. In the book Fischer stated that Germany was the main reason for the outbreak of the first World War in 1914 which backed the claim of the treaty of Versailles. The treaty of Versailles was said to have entirely blamed Germany as the sole reason for the damages the war had caused. Fritz Fisher also stated in his books a number of thesis which were used to argue and put forward the point that Germany had actively planned for a world war since 1912 and as a result should be rightly blamed for starting one.
The first point put forward by Fisher in conjunction with the thesis that Germany was guilty for starting world war 1 in 1914 was Germany’s increased militarism during the years leading up to the war. This signalled that Germany were aggressive and intended to start a war. Fisher points out that between 1910 and 1914 Germany’s military expenditure rose by 73%.
