In 1848, James Marshall was working on a saw mill in California for John Sutter. On January 24, James Marshall found gold in the saw mill. He went to Elizabeth Jam Wimmer to verify that it was gold. The gold James Marshall found was worth five dollars and twelve cents. (www.legendsof america.com) He told John Sutter about the gold. John Sutter tried to keep it a secret but he couldn't. Talk about the gold got out in a newspaper.
This photo has four Chinese men and three Mexicans using a sluice. A sluice is a series of long boxes with ridges in the bottom. Water runs through the sluice, which is angled at a slant. Miners shoveled dirt and minerals into the sluice to find gold. (History book) The sluice carried light weight materials along with it. Mexican miners introduced the pan. The intended audience are young kids in 1852 which they would learn what the gold rush was like and what they used for mining. The author thought kids would see the document.
No one would disagree with the document because it was taken in 1852 by J.B. Starkweather. Starkweather is a daguerreotypist. A daguerreotypist is a photo process invented in 1839.
The first thing that is important about the gold rush is the Chinese miners. The Chinese miners were treated horribly by Americans and Europeans. Americans and Europeans would burn thier tents down. The Americans and Europeans did not like the
