Author- The author of this article is James Madison.
Place and Time- This article was written/said on Thursday, November 22, 1787 and this was the time that the US constitution was in the beginning stages.
Prior Knowledge- Other historical events that were connected to this were the political writings that were written before this one. These writings by the Founding Fathers were explanations of the Constitution and what each article and compromise means. They told people who and how they affected citizens and what the regulations were from the constitution.
Audience- The intended audience for this article written by Madison was to the citizens of the US more specifically New York to give them information on what the articles of the Constitution meant and what they affected. Madison also wrote this to argue against the other Founding Fathers and their articles written about the Constitution and what they thought it meant.
Reason- The purpose to why this was written/said was for James Madison to inform people how to cure mischiefs of factions; the one, by removing its causes, and the other, by controlling its effects. Madison basically wanted to show how to handle a big republic rather than trying to control a small and vulnerable public.
The main Idea- Madison believed that the problem was not with the Articles but the state legislatures, and so the solution was not to fix the articles but to restrain the excesses of the states. He wanted to write a strong political argument that showed that the problem was whether states should remain sovereign or if a settlement should rest somewhere in between. This article under the Federalist Papers was Madison’s viewpoint on how the public should be run and by what standards should be issued.
