Reagan Analysis Paper
In 1980 there are millions of people starving from hunger in America, but yet back in the 1970 there was no issue with hunger. This was because of the President and how he felted about poor people. President Ronald Reagan disregarded poor people as lazy and had no get-up-and-go so this was the reason they were poor and hungry. Not since President Herbert Hoover did a president has no sense of right and wrong when it came to poor people and that they had any accountability in helping those less fortunate. And President Reagan also thought that people with aid that it was their fault, health policies of the Reagan Administration were very hopeless and very slow to respond to the AIDS crisis and other public health problems. If we had to look back at how good Ronald Reagan was as President we will see how puffed up he was and had the interests of large corporations and the wealthy as not only his primary concern, but also his only concern.
Economic Policies
Ronald Reagan once was asked if he believed there is hunger in America, and he said cynically “sure there is; they’re dieting! (Cole, 2014).” He only showed concern for the wealthy thru his two terms in office during the 1980s, the poorest American’s were the elderly and social security changed this and helped millions of American’s live out there old age with self-respect, and healthcare to deal with deteriorating health as they aged. This showed that the government could help in improving people’s lives. Ronald Reagan wanted to stop Social Security and let millions of the elderly to live in severe poverty. He thought it was some kind of reorganization of wealth. Ronald Reagan tried to cut every kind of social spending to fund the military buildup and in the process forced millions more American’s into poverty.
In the 1950s Ronald Reagan was hired by big corporations to stop unions (Cole, 2014). The wealthy and large corporations thought it was one of his greatest accomplishments in office was to destroy the air traffic controllers’ union. This was a plot to end all unions and end the goals of the working poor to make a decent living. A lot of American’s supported Ronald Reagan and believe like he did that is the poor deserve to be poor and nobody have any responsibility in helping them to improve their lives. The minimum wage stayed the same during his eight years in office. This made poor people fall deeper into poverty while working harder and longer for less money while Reagan’s rich friends continued to see their wealth increase intensely. In the Reagan Administration the economic philosophies were very one sided to only benefit the rich. An examination of how well the tax cuts helped or hurt the economy must be reviewed by not just how well the economy performed after the tax cuts but as well as if it helped the poor people better their lives.
