“Should the US have gone to war with Iraq?”
Many people believe that the Iraq war was a great idea and that we were able to reduce the terrorist threat and find who was responsible for the attacks on 9/11. But in hindsight many people think that it was a huge mistake. Consisting of two phases, the first phase was a brief, conventionally fought war in March-April 2003, in which a combined force of troops from the US and Great Britain invaded Iraq and rapidly defeated Iraqi military forces. Followed by the US occupation of Iraq. Many people thought going into Iraq was a good idea because of the attacks on 9/11. Public opinion fell after people began to understand how a lot of the force used in Iraq was not entirely sanctioned and how it was ruining the American Image. I believe going to war in Iraq was a mistake. I agree that in the moment because of the press and after the attacks on 9/11 it might have been a good idea, but after the years went by, new information was uncovered and public opinion was changed.
After the attacks on 9/11 many people were ready to go to war in Iraq and find those who were responsible. After Saddam Hussein refused to leave Iraq, US and allied forces launched an attack by dropping precision-guided bombs on a bunker complex in which the Iraqi president was believed to be meeting senior staff. Ṣaddām Ḥussein was captured on December 13, 2003, and was turned over to Iraqi authorities in June 2004 to stand trial for various crimes; he was subsequently convicted of crimes against humanity and was executed on December 30, 2006. After this many European leaders had voiced their conditional support for the war and none regretted the end of the Baathist regime, but public opinion in Europe and the Middle East was overwhelmingly negative.
