Was the end of Soviet Union inevitable? (CHAP 9)(THEME 4)
I agree that the end of Soviet Union is inevitable. This was caused by many reasons such as internal weakness and external pressure.
The end of Soviet Union is inevitable due to some internal weakness. One weakness was the shortage of basic goods; this resulted in citizens not having basic goods. This caused many people to use illegal ways to get the goods. In addition, it also caused the officials who controlled the goods to be corrupted as people would offer more money to get the goods. Furthermore, another weakness was that most money was spent on military. Due to this, there is not enough money to improve the living conditions of people. As a result, it caused unhappiness as they had not enough food to feed their family and also poor living conditions. This led to discontentment thus not wanting to improve the country. Therefore, due to the lack of support from the people, this caused the end of Soviet Union.
It is also inevitable because of some external reasons. One reason is that Soviet Union has problem with other countries. For example, it had to send troops to Hungary to maintain communist control. This wasted huge amount of resources as USSR had to train more troops which led to more spending. Furthermore, soviet had to provide financial support through COMECON thus causing USSR to spend more than what it should. As a result, this caused USSR to get deeper in debt. When USSR is in debt, there will be no extra money to develop the country but to decline slowly until the end. Therefore, due to the debt increasing rapidly, it causes the end of Soviet Union.
However, there are reasons which show that the end of Soviet Union is not inevitable. If the leaders had found a way to co-exist peacefully with the west without creating so much tension and distrust. USSR would not have
