Which social cause will you work with??

What is the primary social issue which concerns your NPO

I will work with the college drinking social cause. The primary reason why I concern this social problem is that it is a prevalence social issue that every young people has to face and can cause bad influence to our next generation. According to some research, in the U.S., although people under 21 are not allowed to use alcohol, they consume 11% of the alcohol drinks every year. And averagely over 5,000 young people die from overuse of alcohol. ^[1]Since teenagers have less self-control abilities, they tend to make huge mistakes if they don’t receive appropriate parenting or cares. In my opinion, this is a very serious social problem and I am strongly interested in this issue.

What is your mission statement

To reduce the alcohol use of college students, and prevent the consequences tragedy happening.

What facts regarding this issue are important

1. Illegal drinking (underage drinking) consumed 11% of all alcohol in the US
2. 5,000 young people die under the age of 21 as the result of underage drinking
3. 600,000 college students are unintentionally injured under the influence of alcohol
4. 700,000 students are assaulted by drunk students and 1/7 of the victims are sexually involved.
5. Over 11,000 teens try use alcohol everyday
6. As rates of alcohol use by students age 12-17 increase, grade point averages decrease
7. About 25 percent of college students report academic consequences of their drinking including missing class, falling behind, doing poorly on exams or papers, and receiving lower grades overall.
8. More than 150,000 students develop an alcohol-related health problem and between 1.2 and 1.5 percent of students indicate that they tried to commit suicide within the past year due to drinking or drug use.

What is the social ‘product’ you are trying to sell..is it a behavior or attitude or both?

The product is both behavior and attitude.

What are the costs of adopting the behavior or attitude for you’re a member of your target market?

Young people may drink alcohol for several reasons, most of them are mental reasons, including:

1. Young people often drink to gain a shortly release from family problems or school issues.
2. Loneliness, low self–esteem, or other mental problems lead many young people to drink alcohol to gain shortly happiness.
3. Young people tend to use alcohol to gain temporary release from social pressure.
4. Young people may drink to gain confidence in order to better fit into the school or community.
5. Young people are more likely to imitate their parents who use alcohol.

If they are strictly forbidden to conduct the alcohol consumption, those upside effect may be eliminated. So the control use of alcohol in teenager group may suffer from some other mental problems.

What are the benefits of adopting the behavior or attitude for your target market?

1. Meet the law and regulation standard about underage alcohol use.
2. Reduce the number criminal issues such as assault, sexual abuse, and potential family violence.
3. Improve the health of teenagers.
4. Improve the academic performance of college student.
5. Improve the overall profile of college students.
