Executive summary
Ecotourism is defined as; “Responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people.” So, ecotourism is considered an innovative strategy for conservation of natural resources especially in areas where poverty is a real challenge.
The baseline studies of green valley eco tourism Project have revealed that the degradation of natural resources in the area is mainly due to over exploitation and unsustainable utilization of these resources in order to meet the basic needs of the local communities. Moreover, one of the project outputs is: “Alternative sustainable livelihood and sustainable use strategies are developed.Ecotourism is par excellence a model for such alternative strategies.
Also, the Conservation Management Plans for the three ECAs in Cox’s Bazar are strongly supporting the development of ecotourism as a good strategy of alternative sustainable livelihood.
The proposal, in this context, is an attempt to improve the local economy and to provide alternative source of income that is fully compatible with nature conservation. It will also function as a catalyst to trigger similar initiatives in the area. This is particularly important because green vally has not yet developed or demonstrated any ecotourism initiative.
This proposal is expected to be very beneficial to all stakeholders particularly to the local communities that host the project. Jobs opportunities will be created, the capacity of the community will be improved and the local economy will be supported.
