Fahrenheit 451 –
Journal Entry 1:
My overall impressions of the book were pretty good. It was an interesting plot, with a story line that will never get dated. It kept me interested the whole time. At first I was afraid that the book would be too dense and hard to relate and understand. But I was pleasantly surprised when I realized it wad written in reality easy language to understand. Defiantly glad picked this book, it’s in a way relatable. You can tie the burning of books to the hiding of knowledge and corruption that is going on in the world today. I would recommend it to friends because it’s not a super hard read so it’s understandable for many people. Also it’s interesting, and even has some violence. One could even relate it to best sellers like “Hunger Games”. My favorite character was of course, Guy Montage. He turned his life around from trying to burn books, to trying to learn and memorize them. He was at first following the system and doing what he was told, but then started the question the reality of these “dangerous” books. If I had to pick a second favorite character I would chose Claireissa. Even though she is not in the book for that long because she is killed, I feel she had a major role. If it were not for her then Guy might of never started to question the reality of the world he was living in. She put the seed of an idea in his head that maybe he should not be burning books, but instead trying to learn from them. She was a pivotal character in the plot, changing the course of Guy’s life and his ideas. In regards to the story line I was satisfied. It was interesting, and sort of took a different direction than I expected. I was also pretty satisfied with the ending because of the destroying of the city. I feel that it was going to allow them to start over as a different kind of society. It weird to be happy when something is destroyed but its like getting rid of the bad things and corruption and allowing for new growth. It is also at this time that Montag remembers the passage from the bible he was searching for, “The Tree of Life”. It symbolizes the new growth in the city that can happen after it is destroyed.
Journal Entry 2:
There are many major themes inside of Fahrenheit 451. A very important one is censorship. The whole idea of the book is that books are being banned from the people. They are being censored. There is no clear reason for why this even was started in the world the book takes place in, it just it. If you read a book you are punished, if you have them they are burned. They are being censored from society. The author, is himself is saying that he is against censorship. Bradberry is against the narrow mindedness, limited thinking, thoughtless ness, that comes from censorship. He shows that in his book by everyone having very limited knowledge about things,
