Faith and Reason
The main point of this article is to tell the readers that in the past centuries, science and religion ware interlaced between each other instead of “being in war” among them. The author tells the readers that the idea of one field threating the other arose in the late nineteenth century. I share the vision of the author and I agree with him, I believe that each field complements the other. In our time, after the Charles Darwin’s theory, a lot of people started to have second thoughts about everything related with religion. Also, as the author says, people on each field started to see the other as a threat. In my opinion, the people today believe that the two fields are very different, that the things of science try to convince people that science is “bigger” than religion and everything can be explained with it. The religion today in America is an interesting topic because we live in a country where religion is very important. The people here have a lot of beliefs and convictions about their faith, and since I am here, I did not hear anyone trying to mix science and religion. So, the people in America believe that science and religion are fields that go separated from each other.
Enlightenment
The main point of this article is to tell the readers that the most important thought of the Enlightenment was the reason, and how the reason was apply to the society, and to religion. It also explains a little bit this natural-rational religion called deism. I don’t believe that there is something to agree or disagree with this article because if I understood it correctly, it is only telling the readers facts and explanations about different things. The author talks about an idea of Thomas Hobbes, the social contract. We can apply that idea to our time, our society lives under a social contract, there are things that are not written but, still, we know that are some kind of rules to live in society, this is the social contract. In America and in the world, there are a lot of deists, people who believe in God but through their own experience, not through the faith. This posture had problems with the Christianism in the past and it has them now too.
Humanism
The main point of this article is to tell the readers what the humanism is, and explain some beliefs of this movement, or philosophy. I do not share the vision of humanism because the article says that the humanists do not believe in the existence of a deity, and they believe that humans created Gods in their own image. I believe that it is in the opposite way, God created us in his own image, and I do believe in God. There are a lot of people that have humanism beliefs, and it is perfectly normal. Everyone can have their own beliefs, choose humanism as their principal philosophy, or like me, have Christianism as principal worldview. Today, in America, there is a lot of people that tend to be at the liberal end of the spectrum on controversial topics as abortion access, just like the article says, so humanism is present in our days.
