Plato was a classical Greek philosopher that helped to lay the foundations of western philosophy and science. Plato was also a student of Socrates. Plato was also the founder of the Academy in Athens, which was the one of the great philosophical schools of antiquity.
Plato was born in Athens, Greece in the year c. 427 B.C.E. He died in the year c. 347 B.C.E. He was born to an Athenian couple who had noble backgrounds. Plato was given the finest education Athens had to offer noble families. He devoted his considerable talents to politics and the writing of tragedy and other forms of poetry. His acquaintance with Socrates altered the course of his life. The power that Socrates's methods and arguments had over the minds of the youth of Athens gripped Plato as firmly as it did many others, and he became a close associate of Socrates.
