Book summary

I read a book called Around the World in Eighty Days by Jules Verne. The story was about a mysterious English gentleman, Mr Phileas Fogg, who made a bet with the other members of the Reform Club. The bet was, that he could go around the world in eighty days. Fogg started his adventure in England and set off with his French manservant, Passepartout. There was also a detective called Fix who followed Fogg all around the world to arrest him, because he was accused of robbing a bank in England. Fix put obstacles in Fogg’s path just so that he could arrest him whenever he got the warrant from England. Fix also tries to convince Passepartout to help him arrest Fogg, but Passepartout declined the offer. Passepartout started to wonder whether his master was the robber though in his heart he trusted Fogg and didn't want to believe Fix's accusations. Throughout the story Fogg used every trick in his sleeve to get back to London in time. He went through Brindisi, Suez, Bombay, Calcutta, Hong Kong, Yokohama, San Francisco, New York and finally Liverpool. In India there was an Indian girl who was about to be burned alive with her dead husband. Passepartout though out a brilliant plan and saved the woman. The woman was called Aouda and she joined Fogg and Passepartout on their trip around the world. When arriving to Liverpool Fix arrested Fogg and put him in prison. Fogg wasted several hours in prison until the affair got cleared up. Fogg thought that he had missed the deadline and hadn't reached London in time when in reality he reached a full day earlier. Having gone round the world in an easterly direction, his watch was an hour out with each time zone he passed through, and by the time he returned to England, he had gained an entire day. Fogg won the bet and in the end Fogg and Aouda got married and lived happily ever after.
