In fiction novels, the reader should be able to relate to the characters. The struggles that the antagonists face should be relatively general so many people can relate to them. People would be less interested in reading a book that deals with problems that they’ve never faced before. In the novels, Beowulf and Brave New World I can relate to the characters Beowulf and John.
I can relate well to Beowulf because he had to work hard to acheive his goals. Similarly to Beowulf, I have also had to work hard to achieve goals. My junior year, I ran alot and practice soccer in order to get a starting position on Northern's soccer team. Beowulf Proved that he was dedicated to realizing his goals by pursuing through obstacles that he face along the way. One of these obstacles Beowulf faced was when he had to fight Grendel. Another obstacle he faced is when he had to face Grendel's. These two events are great examples of how to persevere through things in order to come out on top. During soccer season last year persevered as well and put in alot of extra effort, and in the end it payed off. I can relate to John from Brave New World because, like him at a certain point I have felt like an outsider as well. John tries to take part in the Indian rituals, but is not allowed to because he is different. When I moved to the United States in grade school from Canada, I had few friends for a while and I could relate to John. This gradually became not of a problem for me. For John it was a huge problem that stayed with him throughout his life.
Fictional novels are supposed to be relatable, so potential readers will be drawn towards the book. If a novel was about a very specialized problem that only few people have ever encountered, not very many people would want to read it. By making the characters and problems generalized you can attract a larger audience. For some reason I can relate well to Beowulf and John, and the struggles they faced.
