Drugs, what do they do to us our body and mind? What effects can they have on our lives and how have they affected modern sport?
Hello and welcome, my name is Blake Foote I am here to talk to you about performance enhancing drugs. There is a huge variety of performance enhancing drugs on the market from supplements to steroids and every thing in between.
There are five main groups of performance enhancing drugs; lean mass builders, stimulants, Pain killers, blood boosters and masking drugs Each one with a different attribute to enhance an athletes sporting abilities so he can become harder better faster and stronger.
Lean mass builders amplify the growth of muscle and lean mass. They are sometimes used to reduce an athlete's body fat. However, they are more commonly used by Athletes wanting to reduce recovery time after an injury or workout so they can do more workouts in a shorter length of time. Common drugs of this class are; anabolic steroids, xenoanderogens and human growth hormones.
Stimulants stimulate the body and mind to perform better by enhancing focus energy and aggression. An example would be caffeine or methamphetamine.
Many people take stimulants that are not athletes to wake you up and or improve your focus through the day. Products such as Berocca performance and coffee will give you this effect and are easily available to the general public.
Painkillers mask an athletes pain so thy can continue to compete and perform beyond their pain thresholds. Blood pressure is increased causing the cells to be better supplied with oxygen. Painkillers used by athletes range from over the counter ibuprofen to powerful and illegal narcotics.
Blood boosters increase the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood. They are used illegally in endurance sport such as cycling. The most public version of blood boosters is EPO, which was taken by 7-time winner of the tour De France, lance Armstrong. He was later stripped of his titles for his misuse of EPO.
Lastly, masking drugs are used to prevent detection of the four other classes of drugs. These are rapidly adapting to stay in front of testing techniques. Which makes them very dangerous because of the minimum testing by manufactures to test the safety of the drug.
Every drug has side effects some much worse than others.
