Facts and Assumptions
A journalist by the name of Barbara Ehrenreich, author and best seller of Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) getting by in America, spent time at a walmart to see if the horrible rumors about the lock ins were true. She saw that many of the store’s cheapest items were unaffordable for the workers. Even with the financial complaints, Walmart has contributed more than any other company the economic vigor that is found in America (Carroll, Bucholtz Case 32 (2015, 32-a). Another serious allegation against wal-mart is having employees working off the clock without any breaks. There have been reports of managers asking employees right before they clocked off to “Do them a favor,” and work an extra four to five hours (Carroll, Bucholtz Case 32 (2015, 32-b). On the other hand, the company itself has been slamming down on managers of individual stores to meet certain deadlines and sales checkpoints. Store managers claimed that their supervisors would pressure them into working hours without pay. The supervisors have been known to delete hours from records to reprimand employees who claimed to work overtime. (Carroll, Bucholtz Case 32 (2015, 32-c). With many attempts to form an organized union, many employees fear the company if they signed on. They fear retaliation and cannot afford to lose their jobs. Walmart is very prepared and is always on watch to see if any unions rise up to take action. With all the hype of rallying people, the hunger for jobs and cheap products seem to out weight the fight. With respect, Walmart’s spokesmen claims that the company is not anti-union and they want everyones input (Carroll, Bucholtz Case 32 (2015, 32-2b).
