This story was a let down. Makhan was a loving and caring father for desiring his son to achieve an education. It is well documented that educated people on average report higher levels of well being. Should Makhan and Barada’s wife, Shorashi, been punished because Makhan’s expectations were too high?

That Barada lets the reader down in the end is foreshadowed when Barada is about to give the BA one last try, but when he finds out that he cannot ride the carriage to school, he contemplates suicide and then decides to become an ascetic. Barada is an over-privileged boy and never grows up from his boyish nature. Although this story is a let down, it contains an important message about privilege and family virtues. Familial wealth is often times not associated with virtues. It is the parents’ responsibility to instill values/morals in their children and Barada’s attitude may be a reflection of Makhan’s failure to raise his son in a virtuous manner.
