In marketing there is the old saying, "Success can only come from being able to differentiate your product." In today's market, there are millions of products that a customer has the ability to purchase. The key to one's success is finding a way to differentiate your product by establishing a more creative way of presenting it to customers. Differentiation can be accomplished by educating customers of the benefits of your products, different distributions channels, offering a superior quality and the list can go on and on. In the past, companies have entered the market and have offered a similar product or services to those already present in the market without differentiating themselves from the competition. To their own surprise, most of them met an unmerciful, financial demise. Those who found the gold pot found a way to be different then their competition and were rewarded with huge gains.
A similar philosophy can be applied to the business professional. A business professional has to compete in the market place against other business professionals for lucrative positions within respectable organization. No longer can a regular Bachelors degree or even a Masters degree guarantee the success in finding a decent job position. Business people must find a method to differentiate themselves in the marketplace. One way for them to accomplish this is through the ability to network. Building up a network of diverse people from different backgrounds or areas of experience is very helpful for any business. Contacts with different clusters or groups help greater opportunities for success. A closed group of contacts does not allow opportunities for this kind of exposure.
