Optimal Educational Environment
The Safety of Students
School safety has become a major issue in today’s society. There has been a major wave of violence that has struck public schools in the last two decades. This makes our children vulnerable to various threats to safety. In society and school districts there has been a major priority put on school safety. The No Child Left behind Act helps allocate funds for programs that help secure the safety of the children. (Essex, 2008)
The National School Safety Center (NSSC) was created to provide assistance in combating school; safety issues. This agency was design to help govern safety issues so that school staff could concentrate on education the students. (Essex, 2008) Student educators should always provide schools in which a student can learn in a safe and secure environment free of violence. This is my list of best practice concerning the safety of students.
• Identify a specific procedure for evaluating and responding to threats
• Identify the potential disasters that could occur on the school’s setting and climate
• Control campus access
• Identify specifically assigned roles and responsibilities
• Identify whom to call in a crisis
• Provide training for all members of the school community regarding cultural awareness and sensitivity
• Establish an emergency operation communication system
• Implement a uniform school crime-reporting and record-keeping system

• Identify potential and reliable sources of information to be accessed once a crisis situation develops
• Perform an assessment of your school’s risk during a national crisis,
Be observant of the activities transpiring on campus (Essex, 2008)
