Plot Summary:
The Great Gatsby is set in New York City and Long Island during the Prohibition era. The exact locations explained are East Egg and West Egg. The novel is associated with materialism and immorality. The main character, Jay Gatsby, is a young, rich man in love with a girl, named Daisy, from his past. The two were separated years ago and now Daisy is married to Tom. Daisy is Nick, the narrator’s cousin, and Nick is Gatsby’s cousin. Gatsby and Nick live in West Egg while Tom and Daisy live in East Egg. Gatsby has always thrived for Daisy’s attention. He had acquired a vast fortune and does everything he can to win her affection, but his mysterious past and numerous rumors about him stand in the way. Gatsby is well known across the city for throwing elegant and gaudy parties. He invites Nick to one, and there he asks Nick to arrange a meeting for Gatsby and Daisy. The meeting is planned and the two are reunited. They are excited and happy to be together, despite the complications in their relationship. This marks a climax. Daisy sneaks around behind Tom’s back. Tom is also having an affair with Myrtle, a poor woman. As many events go on Gatsby’s hopes of being with Daisy strengthen.
