Wish Giver's Theme: "there's no free lunch"
The story takes place in a small town called Coven Tree, where a strange man named Thaddeus Blinn shows up at the annual church social, selling cards which he claims can grant any wish. Four main characters, Polly, Rowena, Adam and Stew Meat, the only adult, all buy the card from Blinn even as they are skeptical of his claims. The three kids use their card for their personal wish, however, the wishes come true in the worst possible way, as curses. They all run to Stew Meat to ask to negate their wishes for his wish, and each learn invaluable life lessons along the way.
And of course, the lesson of the book is that there is nothing free in this world, and that one must pay a price for success and lasting happiness. Another words, there is no magic or shortcuts to achieve anything meaningful in life. Success in anything requires time and effort. In the book, Polly wants friendship and popularity without changing her bad social habits. Rowena dreams of a
romance but lacks the maturity to judge a character. Adam hates hard work on the farm and wants an easy way out. These are similar to challenges we face in growing up. Important things in life do not and should not come to us by making easy choices. Though the results of their wishes turn out to be disastrous, they learn an important lesson that there is no short cut to success or happiness. Therefore, in a strange and creepy way, Thaddeus Blinn is a teacher to the children and it is, don't expect magic to bring you happiness, but that only magic is found at the end of hard work and dedication. That is one terrific lesson all young people need to learn early in life.
