Executive Summary

This report aims to analyze and evaluate how the company Eagle Valley Health Foods can become more sustainable through various sustainable solutions, afterwards propose specific recommendations for the Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Martin Clifton. The report is based on information from a range of information sources, including company reports, books and journals. The findings reveal that the company could improve the packaging of its product, which is currently made from polypropylene, to be more desirable for the product’s target market and be more environmentally-friendly by changing current packaging product material to biodegradable materials. Futhermore, the company should reduce water consumption by encourage workers to minimize the use in cleaning with dry clean up and move to use economical cleaning devices in initial process.

Introduction

Eagle Valley Health Foods is an Australian company producing healthy, organic snack bars made of fried fruits and cereals. The business has been operating out of Adelaide, South Australia for 3 years, and has recently started to make a small profit with the increased public focus on healthy eating.

Humanities Education Centre (2009) points out that there is no globally precise definition on what “sustainability” means since there are many different perspectives on what it is and the way to attain it. The idea of “sustainability” in the concept of sustainable development becoming popular after World Commission on Environment and Development (1987) is determined as a requirement of our generation in managing technology and social organization to balance and equalize the advancement on the needs of economy, environment and society as the average quality of life so that responding these existing needs does not cause adverse effects to the future generation (Bruntland Report for the World Commission on Environment and Development (1992)).
