1. About Oracle

Oracle is an US computer technology company with headquarters at Redwood City, California. Ellison co-founded Oracle along with Bob Miner and ED Oates in 1977 under the name Software Development Laboratories. The story of Oracle started with its founders recognizing an opportunity in relational database .They pioneered in enterprise computing. Thirty seven years hence forth it developed into a billion dollar multinational company.

In 1980s they realized the need of secure data management with reliable partner to handle the information. What it started as Relational Software Inc. in 1970s changed the name as Oracle in 1982. Oracle went public in 1986 on NASDAQ and got into headlines of Wall Street Journal. From there onwards, Oracle did not look back in terms of development. It embraced internet in 1995 and started using Java in 1998 and was the first company to do so. It acquired PeopleSoft its rival in applications in 2005. This marks the beginning of era of domination of Oracle through acquisitions. Despite economic slowdown in 2008, Oracle continued to deliver results and also explored now options.

Oracle now specializes in developing and marketing enterprise software products and computer hardware systems – principally its own database management systems brands. In 2011, Oracle was the 2nd largest software maker in terms of revenue after Microsoft. Oracle also develops tools for database development ad systems of middle-tier software, Enterprise Resource Planning software, Customer Relationship Management software, Supply Chain Management software. Its operations can be broadly categorized into the following: Software and Cloud (Revenue share - 74%), Hardware Systems (Revenue share - 14%) and Services (Revenue share - 14%). They have more than four hundred thousand customers in 145+ counties. In 2014, their net revenue was $38bn.Sixty percent of their revenue comes from 0.1% of their clientele.

Oracle’s portfolio - technology contributes to the lion’s share of revenues because Oracles technology set of business contributes to database, high-availability solution stack and the latest internet stacks along with cutting edge innovations that are happening on the Big data and mySQL trend. And also at the same time on the public cloud services space, currently Oracle’s services are categorized into 4 different layers.

1) Data as a service layer, wherein we specifically engage and provide service to the customers where we have our pre-defined solutions. We offer it as a service

2) Second stack is Software as a Service (SaaS), wherein typically if a customer is interested in having the sales force automation or a human capital management and he is looking at a cloud based solution, then Oracle provides the mas you know, SaaS based offerings.
