Executive Summary
April Song, VP of Supply Chain Management at Fashion Unlimited in Toronto, has been tasked with researching offshore production locations for the company’s clothing line. The purpose of this report is to identify and evaluate a potential country for expansion. The challenge is developing an evaluation grid and then evaluating each country whilst trying to satisfy the criteria provided by Executive Team members.
New CEO, Elizabeth Jennings, with a background in ‘Fast Fashion’ was brought on several months ago. This has indicated a new shift in focus for Fashion Unlimited.
Issues identified and investigated at Fashion Unlimited are as follows:
- The need to accommodate to each Executive Team members request
- Considering a new focus on ‘Fast Fashion’
- Multiple Supply Chains
- Selecting a Manufacturing base outside of Canada
- Looking for factories as ‘good or bad’ offshore
- Expanding Internationally
To analyze these issues the following methodology was used:
- Development of a scorecard and evaluation grid
- Root cause analysis by examining the evidence provided in the case report
- Evaluating each country from the reports provided in the case study
Using the Scorecard tool (Appendix I), April Song could identify key criteria requirements provided from the Executive Team. The information presented also helped April recommend the most attractive country for offshore production.
Through further investigation of the information presented and understanding the needs of the Executive Team, three alternative solutions were investigated. The alternatives investigated are as follows:
- Sourcing a partner for both basic production & ‘fast fashion’ manufacturing
- Selecting a country to source a partner for off-shore manufacturing
- Sourcing basic production & ‘fast fashion’ manufacturing separately
The alternatives were presented to the Executive Team and April Song recommends that alternative # 2 – ‘Selecting a country to source a partner for off-shore manufacturing’ be implemented on a timeline of one year. The evidence from the Scorecard (Appendix I) determined that Malaysia fulfilled the requirements provided from the Executive Team. Fashion Unlimited will begin sourcing for a factory for off-shore production in Malaysia.
