The article chosen to address is from Time Magazine addressing why legalizing marijuana makes sense. Marijuana is the most frequently used illicit drug in the United States and around the globe. In the article the writer addresses the fact that the United States spends $68 billion per year on corrections, and one-third of those are incarcerated for nonviolent drug crimes. The writer goes on to point out that the United States pays out roughly $150 billion on policing and courts and 47.5% of all drug related arrests are from marijuana. Individuals who uphold its legalization, for therapeutic or common use, fall short at recognizing that most expenses of marijuana are not connected to its prevention; they are the expenses consequential from marijuana usage. There is also a widespread fallacy that the standard expenses of marijuana use are those linked to the criminal justice organization. This is a false premise.

The total percentage of individuals incarcerated for the use of marijuana is less than one half of one percent found by. (Caulkins & Sevigny, 2009) The article states that there is a massive potential windfall in marijuana taxation. It is projected that marijuana is the leading currency harvest in California, with yearly profits impending $14 billion. (Klein, 2009) Opposing to the viewpoint of those who support the legalization of marijuana, existing reasonable, preventive, and bipartisan drug guidelines are functioning realistically fine and they have lent a hand in reducing in the rate of marijuana use in our country. If the United States were to permit the legalization of marijuana, the amount of marijuana abusers would raise. Although the quantity of marijuana abusers may not rapidly ascend to the existing numbers for alcohol and tobacco, if marijuana was legally recognized, the boost in consumers would be equally big and quick with resultant rises in addiction.
