Article Rebuttal
After reviewing the article titled “Legalization of Marijuana” I agree in essence with what the writer is saying however I have a few rebuttals to this article. I don’t agree per say that Marijuana should be legalized. But I also don’t believe legalizing it would hurt anyone. People will find ways to get Marijuana illegally whether it is legal or not but why not try to cut down on that. My rebuttal will address a few things that I am not in agreement with.
The writer gives five reasons in his article as to why Marijuana should be legalized. One of the reasons he gave was “Regulated legal markets for marijuana would reduce exposure.” I for one disagree with this. Teens are smoking Marijuana today at a younger age then they did in the last 10 years. Teens have more access to Marijuana then what their parents had when they were teens. Even if you legalize Marijuana Teens will find a way to get their hands on it whether it’s from dealers or friends. There are too many avenues for teens to get Marijuana whether it is legalized or not.
Another reason that the author gave for legalization of Marijuana is “Marijuana keeps money in the U.S. and out of foreign cartels” Once again I disagree with this statement. The U.S. already makes money off of Marijuana when it prosecutes people that use it by fining them. They if they legalize it they lose money less convictions, more people growing it themselves, and more people getting it illegally. The U.S. will lose money if they legalize Marijuana so you say they can tax it, well in comparison to what the government makes off it now, they will have to charge 3-4 times the amount of the street value that most people pay now.
Conclusion
This shows that different claims and unproven statistic have fueled the opposition to the legalization of marijuana. The data is mostly fictitious and has no actual research
