In the modern society, the development of technology has brought many benefits for human; especially in biologic field. On the other hand, it might cause some debates and troubles for people; the “Baby M” case is a typical illustration. A childless couple; Elizabeth and William Stern, hired a surrogate mother; Whitehead, to bear a child for them in exchange for money. But when the child was born, the surrogate mother realized a mistake which she had made and wanted to keep her baby. The issue caused complex ethical debates and the question was asked that “who keeps the baby?” Majority of discussions indicated that the couple has right and adequate conditions to keep the child.
Some people believed that Whitehead should keep her baby because of maternal position and love which was raised during pregnancy. In that process, she had to suffer from certain health problems, even threatening her life. Also Mrs. Whitehead could feel the movement and growing up of baby inside. Moreover, she was painful and quite traumatized to bear the child. Hence, the baby is very precious with her and the linking between mother and the kid became more sacred which could not exchange by money. Furthermore, she was pregnant and actually had to suffer painfulness to bear a child so she have to have certain basic knowledge to take care the baby in the best way which the childless couple could not replace.
One of reasons for the infertile couple should keep the baby is their isolation. At beginning, Elizabeth and William Stern executed a transaction with surrogate mother by exchanging money and the baby because they do not have ability to bear a child. The purpose of this is wanted having the gift of a child to offset the rest of their mental life. Actually, the childless couple might feel lonely because of lacking of the sound of child in family; so the kid would be the best and unique reward than ever. Therefore, they would cherish and give best things for their child.
