Assess how globalization and technology changes have impacted the corporation you researched.
Commodification – and the development of attempts to standardize ‘products’ and to find economies of scale, has had a huge impact for profit education. Being able to turn something like education into a product to be sold has really been developed over the last 10 year here and abroad. For many people the jury is still out of the quality of education received from these schools, but being able to reach a demographic of people who want to complete a degree but because of; location family obligations or work, is unable to do so in traditional college setting. Devry University offers a chance at a price for the non- traditional student to move up at a job, have a new career, or finish a degree they started long ago. (Kirkham, 2013)
Technology is really the bread and butter of for Devry University they were started as technology schools in 1931, so the school really is at the top of lists when it comes to technology at schools. They have interactive course shells for students to be able in real time talk to their teacher; they have on the largest career focused libraries online. Being able to offer these resources to students who cannot make it to campus has really helped the university stay strong in the for profit indrsurty.
Apply the industrial organization model and the resource-based model to determine how your corporation could earn above-average returns.
The industrial organization model for Devry needs to be how to stay competitive in a market of similar priced schools but still keep their core values at hand.
One is cost Devry online program is about $86,409, while its closest competitor Strayer is about 75,800.(Strayer, 2013) While scholarships help, not enough students get it and are very hard to quality. Many students are looking for an education where they don’t have to replay student loans for the rest of their lives. So just a cost by cost compassion Devry loses, by being more expensive.
They win by having employment statics, on how many of their within six months of graduation have jobs which is almost 92%. Being able to provide a statics that no other for profit schools do when marketed right is a big plus. You can earn a degree anywhere but where can get a job with that degree once you finish? 92% of the graduates at Devry are living testimonial for the school.
Resource models: Devry does pretty with this they keep cost low by hiring student workers and a lot of part time workers. They also have tuition reimbursing for employees that allows them to stay loyal to company which keeps costs down on turnover and helps with training costs of new employees. Having alumni come back and teach or work at the university has really made an impact in keeping the culture of the company intact. Successful students who can say this is what a Devry University degree did for me, goes a long way with current students.
